As a part of the Project “Free Legal Aid in South Serbia“, implemented by Partners Serbia, in cooperation with the Municipality of Bujanovac and the Bar Association of Nis, and supported by the British Embassy in Belgrade, Marija Zaric, adviser to the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality (CPE), was on duty on 30 January 2014 in the Free Legal Aid Office in the Municipality Bujanovac.

Citizens were able to address the specific issues and complaints of discrimination and get information about the role and responsibilities of the CPE.

The CPE is competent to carry out the procedure based on complaints in cases of discrimination against persons or groups of persons connected by the same personal characteristic, to receive and consider complaints of discrimination, to issue opinions and recommendations in concrete discrimination cases, and to stipulate measures defined by the Law. In addition, the CPE is obliged to inform the complainant about his or her rights and possibilities to initiate a court procedure or another protection measure, including the reconciliation procedure. The CPE is also authorized to file complaints for protection from discrimination, with approval of the discriminated person.

Through cooperation with CPE, the Project aims to improve access to justice for the citizens of Bujanovac, Presevo and the surrounding areas, as well as to build confidence and integration of different ethnic groups in the social life in the south Serbia.
