Partners for Democratic Change Serbia (Partners Serbia) and Bar Association of Serbia organized a Mock Trial in accordance with the new Criminal Procedure Code in Belgrade, on 21 June 2014.

For the sake of efficiency the number of participating attorneys was limited to 38. For this occasion our trainers Aleksandar Popovic, Vladimir Beljanski and Vladimir Djurdjevic had mentors’ role, while Daniel Linhardt, legal expert from the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI), Miodrag Majic, PhD, Judge at the Belgrade Court of Appeal and attorney Jugoslav Tintor acted as judicial panel.

Some of the most significant changes included in the new Criminal Procedure Code are: gradual replacement of the current principles of the inquisitorial to adversarial model, and therefore more active role of prosecutors and defense lawyers; “equality of arms” in the trial; more possibilities for plea bargaining; as well as development of relevant trial advocacy and negotiating skills.

The seminar was a part of the “Serbia Criminal Defense Capacity Program” implemented by Partners Serbia in cooperation with ABA ROLI, and supported by the US Department of State / Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL).
