2026 Privacy Week: No more business as usual
Under the slogan “No More Business as Usual,” Privacy Week 2026 was held with a focus on the challenges of protecting privacy in a changing social, political, and economic context—both locally and globally. Activists, legal and IT experts, journalists, and researchers discussed the relationship between privacy and freedom of expression in the online environment, the protection of journalistic sources, business models of digital surveillance, and the scope of European Union digital regulations.
Privacy Week 2026 lasted six days and featured more than 15 panels, trainings, roundtables, and workshops, gathering over 700 participants.
The central conference of Privacy Week was opened by Ambassador Marcel Peško, Head of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Mission to the Republic of Serbia, Plamena Halacheva, Deputy Head of the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Serbia, and Ana Toskić Cvetinović, Executive Director of Partneri Srbija.
The event also hosted Dr. Ana Brian Nougrères, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to privacy. In addition to participating in the conference, Dr. Brian Nougrères met with civil society organizations dedicated to the protection of human rights and freedoms.
The key conclusion of this year’s Privacy Week is that there is no freedom without privacy. The right to privacy is not a technical or bureaucratic issue, but a cornerstone of a democratic society, freedom of expression, and human dignity. Without clear institutional accountability and effective protection of citizens’ rights, digital transformation risks becoming yet another space for abuse and inequality.
